NORTHAMPTON - Jeffrey William Luekens, 65, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2014 at home in Florence. He was born in Lakewood, Ohio on July 21, 1948 to William and Jane (Ahlgrim) Luekens.
At home Jeff was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. He was greatly loved and will be immensely missed by his wife Deb of 39 years, son David of Bangkok, Thailand, son Michael and daughter-in-law Elizabeth and grandsons Evan and Samuel of Newburyport, MA, brother Tim and his wife Stephanie of Indianapolis, IN, sister Debbie of Westlake, OH, and many close friends and family members.
We'll always remember and cherish his kindness, his wit, his willingness to help others before himself, his wry sense of humor, and his immense presence. At home you could often find Jeff seated in his favorite armchair, listening to jazz or classical music and lost in one of the several books he was reading at any given time.
At work Jeff will be remembered by countless clients who sought his help over a 40-year career as a legal services attorney, and by all of the colleagues he considered close friends working together toward the same goal of empowering the powerless. Jeff worked tirelessly and selflessly first in Alaska and Michigan, and for the last 30 years in western and central Massachusetts, providing assistance to clients who needed but could not afford legal representation. His work continued until the day before his passing.
At play we'll remember how much Jeff loved to read, to sing, to watch sports, to play cards, to listen to music, to crack jokes, and to have his family around him. He loved vacationing at his family's lake cottage at Linwood Park in Vermillion, OH, where he spent time every summer of his life except one.
At church we'll remember Jeff's deep choir voice, his gentle nature, and his spiritual curiosity and commitment to following in Jesus' path.
At last we'll remember how his family nickname, "The Big Guy," did not allude only to his physical stature, but also to his giant, loving heart. We miss him tremendously, and commit to continuing to practice the values for which he worked and lived.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton. A memorial service for Jeff will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 2 p.m. at Haydenville Congregational Church, 143 Main St., Haydenville. Donations are suggested in lieu of flowers, and can be made to Friends of the Homeless or Community Legal Aid.
