FLORENCE – Alice M. (Makara) Luce, 90, died Friday, July 11, 2014, at Linda Manor.

Born Sept. 2, 1923, in Chicopee, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Pyzik) Makara. Alice grew up in Chicopee, and was a graduate of Chicopee High School. She went on to receive her Licensed practical nurses degree from Cooley Dickinson Nursing School.
Alice married R. Russell Luce in 1943, they began their family and she continued to work at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Later on she also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Arnold, then in the library at Smith college and later in the chapel as a secretary.
Alice loved to volunteer in both the Hospice Shop and at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in her retirement. She kept busy her whole life enjoying travel, crocheting and knitting, belonging to the book club and participating in water aerobics at the Northampton YMCA.
She was predeceased by her husband R. Russell Luce in 2000 and by her son Bob Luce in 1983.
She will be dearly missed by her children Beverly Corbett and husband John of Leeds, Rusty Luce and his wife Kathy of Haydenville, and Karen Holmes and her husband Ray of Westfield. Alice was a grandmother to John, Bob, Dawn and Patti, a great-grandmother to Carrie, Christopher, Seth, Nicole, Rachel, Jake and Jordyn and a great-great-grandmother to Kaylyn. She leaves her sister Jane Modzelski of Agawam, and her nephews Mark and Dave Modzelski.
The funeral for Alice will be Tuesday, July 15, meeting at Our Lady of the Hills Church at 11:30 a.m. with a burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in Leeds, to follow. There are no calling hours.
