NORTHAMPTON - Barbara Burg King, 81, formerly of 99 Blackberry Lane, Northampton, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 12, 2014, at The Village on Pheasant Ridge in Roanoke, Virginia.
Barbara was born June 16, 1933, in Torrington, Connecticut, the daughter of John W. and Elizabeth (Tuttle) Burg. She grew up in Winsted, Connecticut, enjoying summer with her family at their cottage on Candlewood Lake.
Barbara was a graduate of the Gilbert School class of 1951 and Colby College in Waterville, Maine, class of 1955. July 2, 1955, she married her college sweetheart, Franklin King, III, with whom she spent 50 years of marriage until his death in 2006.
Barbara was a longtime 58 year member of Edwards Church. She sang in the choir, served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school and worked at the Edwards Shop and on church fairs. She was also an active community volunteer in Northampton. She gave a lot of her time to the Cooley Dickinson Hospital where she especially enjoyed being the new baby photographer and acting as treasurer of the gift shop.
One of Barbara's greatest joys was spending time outdoors. She particularly loved being on the sandbar in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, on the golf course, on the ski slopes, gardening by her pool and being with family and friends at the beach. She loved to travel, play bridge, was a music enthusiast and was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox.
Barbara leaves her four children, Jennifer Adams and her husband John of Roanoke, Virginia, Frank King and his wife Bonnie of Bonita Springs, Florida, Scott King and his wife Cheryl of Florence, and Betsy Young and her husband Jim of Northampton. She was "Baboo" to her 13 loving grandchildren and 4 great-granddaughters. She also leaves a brother John M. Burg of St. Augustine, Florida, and many extended family members.
She was predeceased by her sister Betsy Burg in 2009.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Edwards Church. There will be no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton is in charge.
