FLORENCE - Henry F. "Hank" Kabat, 80, of the Florence section of Northampton, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 21, 2014 with his family at his side.
Henry was born in Hatfield on Sept. 9, 1933 the son of the late Lawrence and Nellie (Antosz) Kabat. He was raised in Hatfield, attending local schools and graduated from Smith Academy. He attended the Stockbridge school of Agriculture in Amherst and graduated with a degree in horticulture. Hank was the owner and manager of the former Amherst Funeral Home for over 35 years before his retirement. Hank loved the outdoors, whether he was boating, hunting, farming or skiing. He was a diehard Harley man, riding his bike every opportunity he had. Hank had a love of flying, piloting his own plane for many years, and was a member of the Pilots Club at Northampton Airport. He was a skilled handy man taking pride in his ability to tackle any project. He had recently completed the restoration of a 62' Chrysler 300 H and was a member of the Chrysler 300 club. He was a dedicated life member of the Northampton Lodge of Elks BPOE 997. Hank leaves his wife of 61 years; Jane (LaMontagne) Kabat. His sons; Henry L. Kabat and his wife Debra and step granddaughter, Julie Michalowski and Robert L. Kabat and his wife Debra and his beloved granddaughters, Alyssa and Samantha. Hank was predeceased by his brothers; John, Joseph and Thaddeus Kabat. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. At Hank's request there are no calling hours. The family invites you to join them directly at Holy Trinity Polish National Cemetery, Elm Court, Hatfield on Wednesday Aug. 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. for the interment of Henry's Ashes with Fr. Adam Czarnecki, celebrant. In lieu of flowers donations in Henry's memory may be made to the VNA/Hospice of Cooley Dickinson Hospital, 168 Industrial Drive, Northampton, Mass. 01060.
