HOLYOKE - Anne Carter Borton, "Ancy", 81, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Holyoke Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 29, 1931, in Bryn Mawr, Penn., the daughter of the late Hugh and Elizabeth (Wilbur) Borton.

Her childhood was spent in Tokyo, Japan. She spoke the language fluently and in 1936 was the only American in the Tokyo school system where her blond head was greatly admired by kindergarten classmates. She also attended schools in New Jersey and Virginia and graduated from Fairfax High School, Fairfax, Va.

Blessed with a beautiful soprano voice, she attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. and was a member of the famous Westminster Choir that performed throughout the northeast including numerous concerts with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in Carnegie Hall.

While in college, her summers were spent as a cast member of the Lost Colony musical in Manteo, N.C. In 1952 she received her B.A. from Westminster Choir College where she majored in voice, she later received a Master's in music.
Ancy was a music teacher all her life, a consummate musician and loved to share her joy of music. She taught at the Brearley School in New York City, the Moravian Seminary for Girls in Bethlehem and the St Mary's School in Burlington, N.J. Anne taught piano and voice for ten years at Greenfield Community College retiring in 1995, after a disabling car accident.

Since 1996 she has resided at Loomis House in Holyoke. Throughout her life she enjoyed singing, opera, painting in watercolors, reading and the seashore.

With her, sparkling personality and positive attitude she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Also by, her brother, Anthony Borton of Conway; her neice, Tamblyn Borton of Conway; and her nephew Timothy Borton and his family of Harvard.

All services were private and the Williamsburg Funeral Home was entrusted with her cremation.

Contributions in her name should be made to the Music Department at Greenfield Community College.
