NORTHAMPTON - Shirley (Hall) McCool Scanlon, 89, of Northampton, was called home to God on Easter Sunday, March 31, at the Linda Manor Extended Care Facility.

Born in Northampton, November 30, 1923, Shirley was the daughter of the late James and Mildred (Elliott) Hall. She was educated in Northampton schools and graduated from Northampton High School and the former Northampton Commercial College.
She held various office jobs and last worked in the auditor's office for the city of Northampton, when she retired in 1985.
Shirley was a longtime member of the former St. Mary's Church, where she was an ecumenical minister. She also did volunteer work at the Hospice Shop, the American Red Cross Blood Bank, Rockridge Retirement Home and belonged to RSVP in Northampton. She was a member of the Southampton Line Dance Group and enjoyed knitting, sewing and reading. Above all, Shirley found joy in being with her family and friends. She will be dearly missed.
Shirley's first husband, James A. McCool Sr., passed away in 1979. They had been married for 35 years. She later married Thomas A. Scanlon, who passed away in 1986.
Shirley is survived by her son, James McCool Jr. and wife Brenda of Florence; her daughters, Judy Drury and husband Stephen of Canton, Maine, and Joanne Matusko and husband Daniel of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; her nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Carol Ann McCool, and her two brothers, James and Ronald Hall.
Services for Shirley will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Linda Manor Activities Fund, 349 Haydenville Rd., Leeds, MA 01053 or to Hospice/ VNA of Cooley Dickinson, PO Box 329, Northampton, MA 01061. The Ahearn Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
