LEXINGTON - Kenneth D. Cashin, 91, formerly of Belchertown and Amherst and professor emeritus of chemical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, died April 6, 2013.

Born in Lowell, he attended Worchester Polytechnic Institute in 1940, but left to join the U.S Navy Radio and Radar Unit in 1944. He returned to WPI in 1946 to complete his bachelor's and master's degrees. He went to UMass in 1948 as an assistant professor and initiated what became the department of chemical engineering. During a sabbatical year he completed his work for a doctorate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

In the years 1968 to 1970, now a full professor at UMass, he took a leave of absence to establish the chemical engineering department at the College of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

After a series of positions at UMass, he became associate dean of the school of engineering several years before his retirement as a Professor Emeritus in 1985. Ken enjoyed sailing and hunting and was a national amateur trap shooting champion in his late teenage years.

He was the beloved husband of the late Wilma C. (Cozad), loving father of Arthur H. III and his wife Patricia of Nashville, Tenn., David G. and his wife Margareta of Columbia, S.C., and Linda C. Hemphill and her husband T. Scott of Lexington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was the brother of the late Phyllis Cutcliffe.

Funeral Services will be held at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Rd., Lexington, Thursday, April 11, at 1 p.m.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours, which will be held at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Rd., Lexington, Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to College Church, 58 Pomeroy Terrace, Northampton, MA 01060 or Mass General Hospital Heart, Stroke and Vascular Institute, 55 Fruit St., Boston MA 02114. I

Internment will be held at South Wellfleet Cemetery, Friday April 12, at 1 p.m.
