SOUTH DEERFIELD – John M. Szymanski, 93, of South Deerfield, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

Born Feb. 8, 1920, in his current home, John was the son of Antony and Stanislawa (Zalenska) Szymanski and grew up attending the South Deerfield school system.

John served in the U.S. National Guard during World War II, while Henry, his brother, was in North Africa.

On Sept. 28, 1946, John and Edna Baird of Turners Falls were wed in then the St. Mary's Catholic Church. They were married 67 years.

John's employment included farming initially, working on the railroad, then as a truck driver out of Hartford, then for Wolfram Fuel. John also worked as an employee for the town of South Deerfield as an assistant superintendent for the highway department. July 18, 1962, John served the South Deerfield citizens as the water superintendent before retiring on March 31, 1987. John was also a South Deerfield volunteer fireman for 50 years.

John and Edna were devoted to their family and gardening. John is responsible for documenting every family gathering and celebratory events with his camera. Bloody Brook Gardens were used by wedding photographers for many years.

Survivors include his beloved wife Edna; sisters Edith Kocot of South Deerfield and Nellie Omasta of Hatfield; daughters Nancy Shyloski and her husband Edward of Old Lyme, Conn., and Jo-Ann Denehy and her husband Michael of Whately; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

John is predeceased by his brother Henry and sisters Laura and Helen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the Wrisley Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Fr. Philippe Roux pastor officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in South Deerfield.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.
