R. Craig Obituary

R. "Vernon" Craig August 7, 1926 – September 14, 2013 Vernon Craig went to be with his heavenly Father, September 14, 2013, at the age of 87. He was born in Telluride, Colorado to Charles and Ida Craig. After graduating from Delta High School, Vernon joined the Navy during WWII. He later attended Western State College and Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas where he met, fell in love, and married his wife Jane. Vernon rejoined the Navy in 1949, and was trained as a Naval Hospital Corpman specializing in Aviation Medicine, Surgical Assisting, Pharmacology, Optometry, and Medical Technology. He also served on a team that tested the "G" Force for breaking the sound barrier. Vernon also volunteered in the Polio Ward at the Children's Hospital in Kansas City. After 22 years, Vernon retired as a Naval Petty Officer First Class to become the Hospital Administrator in Delta. He was the catalyst behind building the first new hospital facility in Delta. He served as a Grand Master Mason, Deacon, and volunteer for the Grand Junction Community Food Bank. Vernon loved and cared for others his entire life. Vernon is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jane Craig; daughter, Susan (Gary) Rhyne; brother, Dr. Clarence (Margaret) Craig; two grandchildren, Rebecca (Doug) Jardine, and C.J. (Kayla) Rhyne; four great-grandchildren, Austin and Sarah Jardine, and Adalyn and Canon Rhyne; four sisters-in-law, and several cousins. Preceding him in death was his son, James Craig and his parents. A graveside service will be held September 30, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in Ouray, Colorado. Memorial contributions can be made to HopeWest or Monument Baptist Church in Grand Junction.
