Maryanne Gemmell

Maryanne Gemmell
October 6, 1930 - March 14, 2014

Maeryta "Maryanne" Gemmell passed away on Friday, March 14th, with her family by her side.
After her formative years in Wheaton, Illinois, Maryanne spent two years at Illinois Wesley as a music major before transferring to the University of Arizona where she obtained her elementary education degree and met her future husband, Bill Gemmell. Following graduation, the newlyweds moved to Long Beach, CA where Maryanne taught in the public school system of Long Beach, and Bill worked as an engineer for Shell.
After three children and a 25 year professional career in teaching and tutoring, Maryanne and Bill retired to Grand Junction, Colorado where they enjoyed retirement together for an additional 23 years, and reached their 60th wedding anniversary milestone in August of 2012.
She received great professional fulfillment both in front of a classroom, as well as from her tutoring of students where she was able to nurture their emotional maturing in addition to their intellectual development. During her years in Colorado she also devoted her time, energy, and enthusiasm to the Colorado chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood organization helping to raise scholarship funding for college-bound women. She will be remembered for her personal warmth and concern for the welfare of family and friends as well as her intellectual curiosity and appreciation of life.
Maryanne is survived by her brother, Gil, and sons, Mike and Scott Gemmell, and three grandchildren, Alex, Kerry, and Josh.
Memorial services will be held at Crossroads United Methodist Church at 599 30 Road in Grand Junction at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 22nd.
In lieu of flowers, the Gemmell family requests that interested parties forward donations to the Colorado state chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood (www.coloradopeo.org), Maryanne's favorite charity.
