Carrie Shelden October 21, 1912 – November 8, 2012 Carrie was born to Stanislaus Rusniak and Angela Budzowna on October 21, 1912, in Minneapolis, MN. Carrie grew up in Minneapolis where she met her husband, John Shelden. They managed a resort in northern Minnesota. They had a son, Billy "Buzz" Shelden. While John went to work on the Canol Project (Alaska Highway) during World War II, Carrie helped with the war effort by working as a machinist. John, Carrie and Buzz ended up in Alaska in the mid '40s, living in many different places during John's career with the FAA, until 1975, when they moved to Grand Junction. She loved talking about life in Alaska. In 1958, Buzz was killed in an airplane accident. John and Carrie adopted his infant daughter, Cindy, and raised her as their own daughter. While living in Cordova, AK, John and Carrie started bowling. Carrie continued bowling until the age of 98 1/2, she even bowled a few 200s well into her 90s. Carrie had a very generous and independent spirit. She loved bowling, gardening and watching football. She had many hobbies, including sewing, crocheting and making Christmas balls. Family was very important to her. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shelden; son, Buzz; and granddaughter, Jessi Spurlock. Carrie is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Larry) Van Wye of Grand Junction; grandchildren, Kacey Crain, Corey Spurlock, and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date in Fairbanks, AK.
