James Voss Obituary

Dr. James L. Voss 1934 – 2013 Dr. James L. Voss passed away peacefully to be with our Lord on July 12, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with illness. He was born in Grand Junction, CO in 1934, and grew up on the Orchard Mesa family farm until graduating from Grand Junction High in 1952. Jim married Kathleen Alice Claxton, the love of his life, in 1954. After earning his DVM degree at Colorado A & M in 1958, and later obtaining his master's degree at CSU in 1966, he continued to teach and work at Colorado State University as an ambulatory clinician and departmental administrator. In 1986, Jim began a 15 year tenure as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences from which he retired in 2001. Jim was instrumental in the funding and envisioning of the current CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He served on numerous professional committees locally, nationally and internationally to advance veterinary medicine. Jim's lasting contributions to equine research and literature are referenced daily by veterinarians around the world. Jim's involvement at CSU led to the development of incredible friendships and associations with gifted colleagues. Jim's affection for Colorado State University was second only to his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; sister, Rose; brother, Dan; sons, Ed and Bill, and daughter, Laura and their extended families. He has seven grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents, Edward and Ruth and brothers, Richard and Ernest. He will be remembered for his quick wit, honesty, integrity, work ethic and generous contributions to the field of veterinary medicine. A celebration of Jim's life will take place on July 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fort Collins Hilton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Colorado State University/Equine Reproduction Laboratory and sent to the CVMBS Dean's Office, Colorado State University, 1601 Campus Delivery, Fort Collins, CO 80523-1601. In memo of check indicate Voss Memorial.
