Margaret Mae "Rusty" Wollbrinck Knob
May 17, 1934 - December 10, 2016
Margaret Mae "Rusty" Wollbrinck Knob, 82, died December 10, 2016, after a long struggle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. She was born May 17, 1934, in Riverside, CA. "Little Margie," as she was called then, was the youngest of five children, and the only girl born to William Hulbert Thompson and Hazel Mae Jennette DéGhent Thompson.
She developed rheumatic fever when she was eight, and would be plagued by heart problems her entire life, but it rarely slowed her down. At the age of 17, Margie began working on the sales floor for Skip Fordyce Harley-Davidson, Southern California's largest motorcycle dealership, and spent her spare time racing and stunt riding, earning a 1952 Cactus Kate trophy. About this time, she outgrew the little girl's name, Margie.
Marge had three failed marriages that left her with six children to raise on her own: Joy Koury Sullivan, MicheLLe Koury (Dan) Coats, Michael (Rebecca) Koury, Mark Koury, Mathew (Lori) McGaha, and Martin Goldman (deceased).
Being both mother and father to six children wasn't easy, and Marge made mistakes along the way, but she pushed to succeed. She put herself through nursing school, becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She focused on geriatric nursing, giving as much love as she could to the elderly in her care. She excelled at nursing and over the years, she was the Director of Nursing at two different nursing homes. It was during this time that her shock of red hair gave way to the name that stayed with her to the end: Rusty.
Rusty attended UCLA to become a Counselor on Alcoholism and Related Disorders, finding a way to turn personal adversity into a strength, and a way to help others. She was a counselor and sponsor, an Alano Club member, and a successfully recovered alcoholic the day she died. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Delta Ward, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Her six children blessed her with 11 grandchildren: Sean Sullivan (deceased), Marge Regan, Ben Coats, Jake Coats, Michael L. Koury, Melissa A. Koury, Marcus Alan Koury, Elisia Koury, Selena Koury (deceased), Destiny Koury, and Kylie McGaha. In turn, those grandchildren gave her seven great- grandchildren: Dylan Statham, Meagan Fox, Madison Fox, Milana Pacotti, Ryan Clayton, Hunter Koury, Kylie McGaha, (and one due in July).
Preceding Rusty in death were her parents, her husband George Wollbrinck, her four brothers, Albert "Ned" Alcorn, Donald Thompson, Robert Thompson, and William Thompson.
Her funeral service was held December 19, 2016, at Rose Funeral Parlour in Montrose. Her ashes were interred at the feet of her husband George Wollbrinck, and his first wife, her dear friend Annie, at the Olathe Cemetery in Delta, CO.
