Ruth Taylor passed away on August 27. She was 93.
Born Ruth Frances Jones on July 27, 1921, in East Lansing, MI to Walter Franklin Jones and Rebecca May Yole. Ruth and her four sisters were raised in East Stone Gap, VA and on the shores of Chesapeake Bay. She graduated from the University of VA nursing school in 1944, and worked for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York for ten months before joining the US Army Air Corps as a flight nurse. She was stationed at Hammer Field in Fresno, CA and later assigned to Hamilton AFB in San Rafael, CA where she met the love of her life, Cpt. David D. Taylor. She left the service in 1947 and she and Dave married.
They lived in California until Dave returned from the Berlin Air Lift, when they moved to Grand Junction, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. During her career Ruth worked for the VA Hospital, St. Mary's, and finally, for the Mesa County Schools as a school nurse in the Redlands and Fruita areas until her retirement in 1986.
She and Dave traveled extensively after their retirement, including extended trips throughout the U.S. in their motor home and numerous cruises around the world. They visited all the continents except Africa and Antarctica. She loved reading, embroidery, needlepoint and quilting. Dave died in 2000.
She is survived by their four children, David Jr., Diane, Robin and Don and their spouses; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
There will be no services. A private family gathering will be scheduled at a later date.
The family would like to thank her home care assistant, Pat Michalek, for her dedicated and competent care and the staff of St. Mary's Hospital, HopeWest, and the VA-CLC.
