Wayne W. White May 24, 1931 – October 3, 2013 Wayne W. White, 81, of Grand Junction died at home on October 3, 2012 after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born May 24, 1931 in Akron, Ohio to Ronald A. and Helen Johnson White. He graduated from Akron Central High School. He served in the Navy Reserve from 1948 to 1954. He married Joan Edlin on October 15, 1949, they would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary this month. Wayne worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. and other jobs till he learned the tool making trade. In 1957 Wayne, Joan and their daughters, Cyndie, Kathryn and Cheryl moved to Santa Barbara, CA. Wayne played bagpipes for 40 years, including with the Santa Barbara 7up Bottling Co. band in the 60s. In 1970 he went to the California College of Mortuary Science and worked in the field for 25 years. His hobbies included, Scottish pipes, Military history and model trains. He was a voracious reader. He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughters, Cyndie Browning and Kathryn Phillips of Tulsa, OK and Cheryl (Kevin) Kelly of Goleta, CA; granddaughter, Bethany Phillips of Nashville, TN; sister, Margaret Hostettler of Aliance, OH; nieces and nephews; and one great-granddaughter. After retiring to Grand Junction in 1993, Wayne worked for Toys R Us for eight years and then fully retired. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 1 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, Tuesday, October 9. Burial will be at a later date in Carpinteria Cemetery in California.
