Sybil Pillai Curtis
October 31, 1924 - April 28, 2014

Sybil Pillai Curtis passed away peacefully at HopeWest Care Center on Monday, April 28, 2014.
She was born in Thaton, Burma on October 31,1924. She was preceded in death by her parents, K.S. Pillai and Ma Amazi Pillai; two brothers, Sonni Pillai and Ernie Dharma, and her beloved husband, John "J.B." Curtis.
Sybil and John shared over 40 years of marriage, exemplifying an enduring love between husband and wife. Together, they travelled the world, spanning many continents and cultivating friendships wherever they went.
A great joy for Sybil was entertaining friends at her home. Visitors to their home were amazed at the flowers and trees and the park-like landscaping that she and John carved from the desert. They had a great love of nature and animals, as well.
Sybil was a lifelong educator, even when retired. She began her career as a classroom teacher and eventually became the first female principal in Mesa County Valley School District 51. Sybil left a profound impact on her students, faculty and staff. Former students frequently contacted Sybil to share memories and to thank her for the difference she made in their lives.
Sybil made the world a more loving and beautiful place. She touched many lives and inspired others to do the same.
Continuing her legacy are her daughter, Jan Jermain and husband Clark; granddaughter, Michelle Seybolt and husband, Bobby; great-grandchildren, Parker and Peyton Seybolt all of Oklahoma, and many dear friends.
Jan and Michelle extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Madrid and Dr. Harawi for their kindness. Thank you to the staff of Monument Assisted Living Center for taking such good care of Sybil and making the last few months so comfortable for her.
We were blessed to have shared the last days of Sybil's journey at HopeWest Care Center. The compassion and care shown to Sybil, and to us, by the staff and physicians will always be remembered.
A memorial service will be conducted at Callahan-Edfast in Grand Junction, Colorado at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in her memory to HopeWest Care Center, 3090 North 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
