This woman's work in "Roadside Geology of ..." has been a constant backdrop to my travels in the west. She changed my view of the world and my friends' view of me. Thank you for the great work.

Halka was an elderly member of the Modjeska family I only met once when interviewing for our documentary on her great-grandmother,although we spoke several times by phone. In that period, I realized this was a woman who spent her life doing exactly what she wanted. She surrounded herself with nature, academics, family and placed her bar high. She seemed stubborn, but focused and determined. I could see the "Modjeska lifeline and joue de vivre" radiating from her. Her trust had to be gained with time. I am happy to have been a very tiny part of her life through our film. I am happy she shared her life and thoughts with me and felt the film was worthy of her contribution. But most important, through her I was introduced to a few of her beautiful, strong and artistic daughters who showed great compassion. The legacy continues. Thank you, Halka, for teaching me that there is so much to still explore on this earth. You left your beautiful mark for us to enjoy...

I read obituaries of strangers religiously (evidence that perhaps I should get a life) and every once in a while I find a little gem, like this, that makes me wish I had met the person who has passed on to the next realm.
It sounds as though Halka built a constantly transforming and interesting career, focused on the activities she truly loved doing, and maintained a life-long curiosity about the world around her. And that's an inspiration to us all.
