Doris was born April 19, 1919, in Northwood, the daughter of Carl and Ernestine (Buth) Urdahl. She was baptized in May of that year by the Reverend Fosness. In May 1932, she was confirmed in the Christian faith by the Reverend J. W. Ylvisaker.
She attended school at Lisbon, N.D., for her first two years of education. Then in 1926, the family moved back to Northwood, where she entered third grade. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1936. The following year she matriculated at St. Olaf College, where she obtained her B.A. degree in 1940, with majors in English and Latin. She taught one year in North Dakota and then returned to Iowa, where she taught in Bode, New Hampton, and Northwood for a total of 33 years.
On July 5, 1942, Doris married Field M. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Johnson of Drake, North Dakota, at First Lutheran Church, Northwood. Pastor Arthur Tolo performed the ceremony. The couple made their home in New Hampton until 1950, and their son Mark was born there. They moved to Corwith for two years and then to Northwood.
Doris has been a member of First Lutheran Church, and in early years she taught Sunday School and Bible School; she also was active in circle and FLW. At the time of her death she was still a member of Anna Circle and New Century Club.
After she retired from teaching, she took some quilting classes, enjoyed piecing quilts, pillow tops, and wall hangings, and for several years was a member of the North Iowa Quilter's Guild. She and her husband took several trips to Canada and parts of the U.S. as well as one to the Scandinavian countries. She has also been an avid reader.
Doris is survived by her son Mark Alan Johnson and his wife Brenda Steffens Johnson, Cresco; a niece Randi Robin, Vancouver, B.C.; sister-in-law Ilet Johnson, Newberg, Oregon; many nieces and nephews on the Johnson side; also special grandchildren Mandi, Ashley and Anna Fewins and their parents Wanda and Oscar Fewins, Mason City, Iowa.

Mrs. Johnson was my favorite teacher and I am glad I told her so a few years ago. She contributed a lot to my development and love of language, both English and Latin.

Mark and Brenda -

Our families have quite a long history; spanning back to the 1930's at least.

My brother Donn and I are deeply saddened to learn of Doris's passing.

Doris would always open her doors wide and she would spend as much time as I wanted to visit with me. I considered her to be a very patient and wise person.

I stopped in to see her more often in recent years when I have been in Northwood. Doris and my mother, Carol, were "buds" as you well know.

I miss her already.

I had her in school and didn't appreciate her then, but now having kids of my own and older, I realize she actually wanted to teach, it meant something to her and I was lucky to have her.
Blessing to her family

I was sorry to hear of Mrs. Johnson's death, she will be missed. As others do, I have fond memories of her classes in high school. She was one of the last Latin teachers in Iowa and that is also a great loss. Yes, I truely valued learning Latin from her. When I was at the U of I in my later years, I even had a much younger student tell me how lucky I was to have been able to take Latin in HS because he wanted to and couldn't.
Many good thoughts and prayers to her family. She lived a long and good life and had such a positive influence on so many people.
