Duaine Greenfield Obituary

Duaine Henry Greenfield, 80, formerly of 190 Main St., Dubuque, died peacefully Sunday (July 4, 2010) at Luther Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Rockdale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jennifer Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery with military rites accorded by the American Legion Post No. 6 of Dubuque.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 390 N. Grandview Ave., Dubuque.
Duaine was born Dec. 8, 1929, in rural Rudd, son of Henry and Lena (Eden) Greenfield. He graduated from West High in Waterloo in 1947. On Oct. 28, 1983, he married Jane (Redfearn) Timmerman in Hudson.
Duaine was an electrician's mate in the Navy during the Korean conflict and remained in the Navy Reserves until 1960 when he received an honorable discharge.
He began his working career as a glazier working for Standard Glass in Waterloo. Later he worked for The Nurrie Companies managing their glazing operations in Memphis, Tenn., Kansas City, Kan., and Dubuque. He later purchased the company today known as Dubuque Glass Co. Duaine also owned and operated Dubuque Builders Exchange.
Duaine was always very active in his community. He was a member of Rockdale United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Dubuque Home Builders Association, Dubuque Shooting Society 990 Club, Dubuque Yacht Club, Mid-Town Mariners, Dubuque Golf & Country Club, Dubuque Chamber of Commerce and Dubuque Main Street Association. He also served on the City of Dubuque Historic Preservation Commission.
Duaine worked diligently along with the City and Main Street Association, to revitalize the Lower Main District. He renovated several properties in this district. In 1996, he received an award from the Dubuque County Historical Society for renovations to the building at 198 Main Street. The renovation of 190 Main St. received awards from Dubuque Main Street, Main Street Iowa Program and Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance.
In 2000, Duaine and his wife Jane retired to a small retirement community in Arkansas. They enjoyed nine years in Horseshoe Bend where Duaine was very active with the community. They returned home to Dubuque in June 2009.
Duaine enjoyed golfing, boating, playing euchre, and pool, having coffee with "The Knights of the Round Table" at the Julien Hotel each morning and being with family and friends. For many years, he was Santa Claus for the Mid-Town Marina's Children's' Christmas party. Duaine never met a stranger.
Surviving are his wife, Jane, of Dubuque; three daughters, Kathe (Neal) Rusher of Juniata, Neb.; Suzanne (Steve) Butt of Dubuque and Joan (Tony) Reidsma, of Holland, Mich.; one son, Timothy (Lynn) Greenfield of Dubuque; two step-daughters, Julie (Patric) Hahn of Indianapolis, Ind., and Gina (Kevin) Jaeger of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Careldena "Toddy" Shanks, of Rudd; and a brother-in-law, Loren Quarn, of Osage; a nephew, Larry (Connie) Shanks of Spring Branch, Texas; and two nieces, Virginia "Ginger" (John) Holmes, of Spirit Lake, and Patricia (Dave) Ehresman, of Arden Hills, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, David; a sister Ruberta (Greenfield) Quarn and a brother-in-law, Roger Shanks.
Memorials may be sent to Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Dubuque.
A celebration of Duaine's life will be held at a later date at Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church in Horseshoe Bend, Ark.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care of Duaine.
