M. Ray Farthing

GRETNA-M. Ray Farthing, age 71 of 2028 East Gretna Road, Gretna died Sunday, December 12, 2010 at his residence.

Born May 8, 1939 in Danville he was a son of the late Jessie Bennett Farthing and Mary Short Farthing. He was owner operator of Ray's Welding & Auto Repair for 42 years. He was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church . Ray enjoyed gardening and loved his dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Gypsy Hedrick Farthing of the residence; one son, Timothy Ray (Bubba) Farthing and wife, Bobbie of Gretna; one daughter, Tonda F. Wade and husband, Tommy of Rustburg; his granddaughter, Morgan Rae Wade, the apple of his eye; one brother, James M. Farthing and wife, Pattie of Gretna; and three sisters, Nellie F. McDaniel of Danville, Kathleen F. Merchant of Danville, and Jean Farthing Yates of Lynchburg.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by Rev. R.G. Rowland and Rev. Ryan Patterson. Burial will follow in Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, VA 24557, the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 615, Gretna, VA or to Greenfield Baptist Church, P.O. Box 875, Gretna, VA .

Gypsy, you and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers. I can not fathom the devastation and loss that each of you must be feeling. Hold firm to Gods unchanging hand during this time of grief and find comfort in knowing that Ray is watching over you all from heaven.
