Evelyn Inez Brooks Smith Evelyn Inez Brooks Smith, 87, of 1600 Fulton Heights, Danville, died on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Riverside Health and Rehab after a decline in health for several years. Mrs. Smith was born in Burlington, NC a daughter of the late Moses J. Powell and the late Irma Lavender Powell. She spent most of her life in the Danville area where she worked for the former Disston Plant and was a member of Gatewood Baptist. Mrs. Smith was first married to Dewey G. Brooks in 1941 that died in August of 1967 and in 1968 she married Julius L. Smith, Jr. who died on October 23, 2007. Mrs. Smith is survived by four children, Nelson R. Brooks and his wife Emily of Yanceyville, NC, Sherry B. Taylor and her husband Arthur Taylor, Jr., of Danville, VA, Karen B. Alderson and her husband Pat of South Boston, VA and Joel R. Smith of Danville, VA; two brothers, Richard Powell and Norman Powell both of Hampton, VA; six grandchildren, Debra T. Shelton, Angela T. Bartley, Dwayne R. brooks, Kim B. Henderson, Bryan P. Alderson, and Brad L. Alderson; and fourteen great grandchildren, McKenzie Henderson, Trey Henderson, Charity Henderson, Deacon Henderson, Magen Brooks, Dakota Brooks, Dustin Brooks, Taylor Brooks, Alexander Alderson, Aubrey K. Alderson, Matthew Shelton, Brandi Shelton, Landon Bartley, and Joshua Bartley; two Great Great-Grandchildren, Brooklyn Shelton and Laci Shelton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Betty P. Dowdy. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Reverend Carl Burger. Interment will follow the service in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at others times the family will be at the residence of her granddaughter Debra Shelton at 505 Indian Trail Road Danville, 24541.
