Irving Melnick M.D.

NAPLES, FL-Irving Melnick, M.D., died in Naples, FL, on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Dr. Melnick was born in Winburne, PA, in 1931, the only child of Jacob and Frieda Goldberg Melnick. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Science degree from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. In addition to other honors, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. After completing his residency in Urology, Dr. Melnick settled in Danville, VA, where he spent the next 30 years in the private practice of Urology. Under his leadership, the Danville Urologic Clinic grew to 12 physicians and over 100 employees. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Melnick served for several years as President of the medical staff of The Danville Regional Medical Center, and subsequently on its Board of Directors. He was Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Clinical Instructor in Urology at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC.

Dr. Melnick was known as a kind and compassionate man. He was loved not only by his family and friends, but also by colleagues and employees. He served on the Board of Directors of Temple Beth Shalom in Danville, VA, as President of the Danville Lodge of B'nai Brith, and on the boards of the Beth Sholom Home of Virginia and the Virginia-North Carolina Anti-Defamation League. He and his wife have been generous supporters of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America. Dr. Melnick is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dovie Melnick, of Naples, FL, and Atlanta, GA; their four children, Stuart Melnick and his fianc‚e, Pam Crespo, both of Naples, FL; Jeffrey Melnick and his wife, Ofira, of St. Louis, MO; Rachel Finglass and her husband, Larry, of Atlanta, GA; and Ilana Melnick and her husband, Gregory Herman, of Atlanta, GA; and ten grandchildren, Jack and Eli (Stuart); Lior, Nitai, Gil and Noga (Jeffrey); Joshua and Rose (Rachel); and Ariel and Natanel (Ilana). Rabbi Ammos Chorny officiated at graveside services on Thursday, November 29, 2012, in Naples, FL. Comforters are welcome at the Melnick home, 1403 Gormican Lane, Naples, FL 34110, where the mourners will sit Shiva.
