Dale Bailey Obituary

Dale S. Bailey, a long time teacher at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville died 7:34 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice in Edwardsville.
He was born March 26, 1925, in Blackfoot, Idaho, the son of the late George R. & Teresa (Horne) Bailey.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (nee Taylor) Bailey of Glen Carbon, IL; 3 daughters, Marcy Bailey-Adams & husband Ned of Natick, MA, Jeanne Bailey of Edina, MN, and Ellen Dickson & husband Kerry of Glenview, IL; 1 son, Steven George Bailey & wife Karen Goodhope of Clayton, MO; 1 sister, Verna Branstitre of Blackfoot, Idaho; and 7 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Hale (nee Bailey), and brothers, John M. Bailey, Frank Bailey, and Lee Bailey.
Dr. Bailey came to Edwardsville in 1966. At the time of his death he was Professor Emeritus of English. At SIUE he served twice as assistant chairman in the Department of English, was Dean of the School of Humanities from 1973 to 1976, and at the time of his retirement was Supervisor of Student Teachers in English.
He was an airplane mechanic for three years in the E.T.O. with the US Army Air Force. He spent three years in Brazil as a Mormon missionary. Dale received his BA from Brigham Young University in Utah, his MA from Columbia University in New York, and his PhD from Indiana University. Dale taught English at Brigham Young University and then became director of the Binational Centers in Recife and Brasilia with USIS, as well as a Branch Cultural Affairs Officer for the State Department in Brasilia. He joined the faculty of SIUE upon completion of his tours of duty in Brazil. He was with SIUE for 25 years and a volunteer at the Edwardsville Public Library following his retirement.
According to his wishes his body was donated to Washington University School of Medicine.
A private memorial gathering will be held at a future date. Memorials may be given to the Friends of Edwardsville Public Library.

Uncle Dale lived with our family for a while after serving in the armed forces. I was at BYU at the time he was teaching there and spent many Sunday's with him.
