George Port

George Robert Port Jr. 92, Maryville, Illinois passed away at 4:50 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Edwardsville Nursing and Rehabilitation in Edwardsville.
He was born June 20, 1922 in Tyrone, Pa., a son of the late George R. and Ruby E. Elizabeth (Fowler) Port Sr.
He married Mary Frances Sexton on December 12, 1942 in Washington DC and she passed away on September 21, 2012.
He retired in 1985 from Shell Oil Refinery in Roxana after 34 years of dedicated service as an engineer. He proudly served his country in the United States Marines during World War II. He enjoyed his days of fishing, camping, traveling and tending to his garden and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. He is survived by four children and their spouses, Robert David and Ruth Port of Big Rock, Illinois, Christopher Bryan and Karen Port of Alton, Linda Carol and Robert Niebling of Edwardsville and Julia Elaine and Ken Cates of St. Louis, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, one sister, Thelma Snyder of Tyrone, Pa, and other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Port and a sister, Janet Getz.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Friday, July 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 26, at 9 a.m. with Rev. Paul Canner officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
