Gerald Conrad Uhe, 72, a chemistry and physics teacher, a farmer, husband, father and grandfather passed away February 1, 2013 at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, IL.
He was born in Highland, IL on September 19, 1940 to Aletha (Conrad) and Erwin W. Uhe. His parents preceded him in death. He married Lori Ottwell on August 21, 1964.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lori, his daughters Shawn Uhe, of Edwardsville and Kendra Uhe (Jim Hubrich) of Arlington Hts., IL and his grandchildren, Christian and Joseph Hain and Isabella and Amy Hubrich.
He also enjoyed spending time with Neil, Austin, and Kenzy Probst.
Gerald graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1958 and played football, basketball, and baseball. He participated in the 1956 basketball team, which went to the state championship. Gerald graduated from the University of Missouri, Rolla in 1962 and received his MS in Education from the University of Illinois
in 1970. He taught chemistry and physics at North Greene High School, Southwestern High School, and Roxana High School. He loved his students and teaching for 31 years, and he co-sponsored the Proms for most of those years.
He supported his alma mater, University of Missouri at Rolla at college fairs for over twenty years and later started a scholarship for students attending the university. In 1988, he received the Alumni Service Award for sending numerous students to Rolla, and he is a member of the Golden Shillelagh.
Gerald also farmed in Alhambra and Hamel for over forty years. He raised and showed registered Black Angus cattle. He was an Illinois Angus Association Director in the state organization for the local associations of Illinois Valley and the Southwest. He was on the Highland Fair Board for many years and publicized the Madison County Fair where he showed his Angus cattle. In his limited spare time, he loved sports, especially football. He also worked as a high school and college football referee for many years. He was an avid duplicate bridge player for over fifty years.
Gerald was a 38 year member of Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville where he was the President of the Church Council, an usher, and a member of the finance committee. His baptism and confirmation, 1954, was at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra. He is a member of the Edwardsville Masonic Lodge #99 and Order of the Eastern Star #667, where he was a four time Past Patron. He is also a member of the Scottish Rite and Ainad Shrine.
Visitation will be Monday, February 4 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville, IL. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, February 5, at 10:30 am at Eden United Church of Christ with burial following in Salem Cemetery near Alhambra. Memorials can be made to the Gerald and Lori Uhe Scholarship at Missouri Science and Technology University or to Eden United Church of Christ: Bible Fund.
