John J. Koch, age 94, of Edwardsville, Illinois died at 3:35 a.m. Saturday, February 02, 2013, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville
John worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Edwardsville as a rural carrier for 14 years. He later operated numerous bowling alleys for 23 years including VFW
, Montclaire, and Cottonwood in Edwardsville, as well as 2 in St. Louis. John was born April 19, 1918, in Edwardsville Township, the son of the late Jacob F. and Louise (Antenen) Koch. He married Edna Campbell on June 5, 1938, at Eden United Church of Christ by Rev. Bredehoeft. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2003.
John is survived by a sister, Esther Kacer & husband Larry of Glen Carbon and several nieces & nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Mary Koch Davis, and three brothers, Olin F., Arlin, and George Koch.
John was a member of Eden United Church of Christ. He served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp during World War II
. He served 22 months in the Pacific Theatre. John was an active life member of American Legion Post 199, a life member of Edwardsville VFW Post 1299 where he served as Commander, and he was a member of the Executive Board of the Madison County Veterans Assistance. One of John's greatest honors was going on the Honor Flight that took veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam war
s to see the memorials built to honor their suffering and sacrifice to keep this great nation free and a world leader. John was accompanied on the trip by 2 nieces, Barbara Weghorst and Lynn Thiel. He was also an avid fisherman, who was known to share his "catch" with others. He was a member of Edwardsville Moose Lodge #1561.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2013, at Eden United Church of Christ with Rev. John Roberts officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
