Paul E. Schmidt, age 86, of Edwardsville, Illinois died at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
Paul was retired after 22 years as store manager at Schmidt's Carpet in Edwardsville. Previously he was employed at Edwardsville Lumber Company where he worked for 21 years.
Paul was born April 7, 1926, in Edwardsville, the son of the late Edward C. & Elizabeth M. (Novak) Schmidt. He married Betty M. Mueller on May 14, 1949, in Edwardsville.
Besides his wife, Paul is survived by 2 sons, Terry L. Schmidt & his wife Ann of St. Louis, Mo, Thomas L. Schmidt & his wife Deb of Lafayette, Indiana; 1 daughter Tracey B. Fleming & husband Dennis of Edwardsville; 8 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Tim) Leinberger, Andrew, Benjamin, Zachary, and Lucas Schmidt, Tricia, John, and Joseph Fleming; 4 great grandchildren, Terrion Mills, Emma, Claire, & Lily Leinberger; 1 brother, Robert L. Schmidt & his wife Boots of Aurora, Illinois; 1 brother-in-law, Richard V. Mueller & his wife Rosemary of Edwardsville; and many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Margaret Schmidt.
Paul was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Edwardsville, Trinity Lutheran Church Men's Club, as well as many boards & committees at the church. He was a graduate of Edwardsville High School. He was a Veteran having served in the 63rd Infantry Division under General Patton in the U.S. Army
during World War II
. He was also a member of the Edwardsville American Legion Post 199 and VFW
Post 1299, the last Man's Club, Past President of the Edwardsville Lions Club, Senior Golf and Senior Bowing League. His interests included many outside activities, hunting, and fishing.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. John Schank officiating. Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery.
