Obituary
The Guest Book is expired.

Dorothy Marie Solter, lifelong resident of Edwardsville, died Jan. 15 at 3:15 a.m. at the Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra.
Born on Nov. 11, 1913 to Frank and Marie (Richter) Spindler, she was the oldest of three children. In living for over 100 years, Dorothy experienced the major events of the 20th century as a personal history. Her father died in the 1918 flu epidemic and she and her two younger brothers, Glenn and Carrol, were raised solely by their mother.
After graduating high school in 1932, Dorothy worked for the Woolworth 5 and 10 cent store and was a waitress at the popular Cathcart's Restaurant. Subsequently she worked at the Elder shirt factory during the height of the depression as a pressor and then at the Home Building and Loan as a secretary. She lost a brother, Carrol Spindler, during World War II as a POW in the Philippines.
Dorothy married Gus Solter of Solter and Kriege Hardware on March 4, 1941 and had two daughters, Ruth Carol and Mary Margaret.
During the 1960s she worked part-time at Mrs. Seibold's Bakery in Montclaire Shopping Center.
Dorothy was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 85 years and served in many ladies groups. She enjoyed handcrafts and signing with the Happy Notes chorus. Dorothy was also blessed with excellent health and a happy disposition. She loved hosting parties for her friends and preparing holiday dinners for family.
She is survived by both daughters, Ruth Shindel of Rockford IL and Mary Russell of Decatur IL and three grandchildren: Dr. Alan Shindel (wife Dr. Tami Rowen) of Berkeley, CA, Katie Sussen (husband Chad) of Bismarck, N.D., and Nathan Russell of Columbia, IL. She lived to see one great grandchild, Jack Sussen, born in 2011.
Dorothy's funeral will be at the Saksa Mateer Funeral Home, 218 N. Kansas St., at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, with visitation one hour preceding. Dr. John Hebruch and Rev. Joy Myers will officiate.
Private burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.
