Robert E. Klie, age 90, of Edwardsville, Illinois, died at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

He was born November 23, 1923, in East St. Louis, Illinois, the son of the late Elmer George & Jesse Mae (Carpenter) Klie.
Robert worked at Shell Oil Refinery in Wood River, Illinois, for 38 years before retiring in 1985 as a chemical engineer. During his years at Shell Oil he also taught chemistry at Roxana High School, Lewis & Clark Community College, and at SIUE.
Robert married Mary "Eileen" Kercheval on September 20, 1953, in Windsor, Illinois.
Along with his wife, Robert is survived by two sons, Ross Klie & wife Mary Ann Tomaszewski of Anchorage, Alaska and Richard Klie & wife Jan of Edwardsville; one daughter, Mary Schamel & husband Tim of Eureka, Missouri; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and 2 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry K. Klie. Robert graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and then went on to get his Masters Degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, was a member of the American Legion Post 199. He served as a scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout. He was also a member of the American Instrument Society. Robert was a member of the First Christian Church in Edwardsville and served as an elder there for many years.
He will be cremated according to his wishes. A memorial visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the First Christian Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church with Rev. James Brooks officiating. Interment will be at a later date at the Cochran Cemetery in Windsor, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the Boy Scouts of America.
