Melvin "Mel" Blase, age 92, of Collinsville, died at 5:55 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at St. Sophia's Nursing Home in Florissant, Mo.

He was born May 26, 1922, in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, the son of the late William and Emma Meyer Blase.
He married Elfrieda Schikowski on Sept. 27, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons Craig (Mary Jo) Blase of Collinsville and Jan (DeYon) Blase of Hollister, Mo.; three brothers: Wally (Joey) Blase of Sun City, Ariz., Richard Blase of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Harold (Eileen) Blase of Azle, Texas; two sisters: Dorothy Wagner of Nashville, Ill., and Kathy (Jim) Shelton of Plano, Texas; grandchildren: Erin (Brian) Kennedy and Meloney Maggard and great-grandchildren Blair Kennedy, Audreyella Maggard, Laish and Cadence Maggard, special family members Shirley Bah and Fran and Gene Forst and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Blase served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He was a member of V.F.W. Post No. 5691 in Collinsville. He was the former owner of Mel's Garage in Collinsville from 1950 to 1987. He was blessed with a large and loving family and good friends. Airplanes were his passion throughout his life and he was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, at the funeral home with the Rev. Fred Kraemer officiating.
Per his wishes, his remains were cremated.
Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Heartland Hospice.
