Vera M. Burkard, 84, of Springfield; formerly of Paxton, Edwardsville and Ankeny, Iowa, died at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at her home.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Glen Cemetery, Paxton with Rev. J. Michael Smith officiating. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton is handling arrangements.
Vera was born September 24, 1929 in Foosland a daughter of James and Stella Edmonds Brock. She married Alva A. "Bill" Burkard June 25, 1949 in Paxton. He preceded her in death on October 13, 2003.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Jill (Douglas) Garbs of Edwardsville, Jennifer (Brett) Long of Springfield; one son, Jeffrey Burkard of Long Beach, California; four grandchildren, Melanie (Matt) Neely, O'fallon, Ashley, Britney and Kayley Long, all of Springfield; 2 great grandchildren, Olivia and Cooper Neely; a brother, Richard L. (Barbie) Reynolds; a niece, Megan and a nephew, Lewis, all of Frankfort.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Ryan Garbs.
Vera grew up in Gibson City and Paxton. She attended Paxton Elementary school and graduated from Paxton High School. She was a secretary for the Springfield Public Schools and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
