Joseph Marion Gatton, 82, of Edwardsville and Dunedin, Florida, passed away peacefully on Feb. 8, 2014, at home with his family by his side.
Joe, the son of Louis and Agnes (Murphy) Gatton, was born on Sept. 30, 1931, in Pawnee, Ill. He married his high school sweetheart, Lou Ann Jenkins, on April 2, 1950, in Pawnee. She survives along with his six children: Joyce (Larry) Freitag, Kathy (Larry) Moore, Therese (Kenny) Woodley, Dan (Kim) Gatton, Phil (Cindy) Gatton, Julie Farmer; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; a brother; a sister and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a son: Dr. Thomas Gatton; a brother: Donald Gatton and a sister: Rosemary Bailey.
Joe graduated from Pawnee High School in 1948 and earned a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University in 1963 while working midnights for the Illinois Central Railroad and helping raise seven children. Joe then retired from State Farm Insurance after 30 years.
Joe had been an active member of the Rotary and Optimists Clubs in Edwardsville and in his retirement in Dunedin. Joe and Lou Ann loved to travel and visit their many Canadian friends.
Joe was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Suncoast Hospice for their never-ending support, whose love and compassion helped make Joe's long journey easier.
Visitation will be at Bramley Funeral Home in Divernon, Ill., on Friday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with funeral service immediately following.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Pawnee.
