Marjorie Eileen Compton was born in East Alton on April 6, 1928, to Gertrude Cooper-Johnson and Elmer Johnson of East Alton.
Marjorie attended school in East Alton and after graduation worked at Western Cartridge Company from 1946 to 1960 as a secretary. She married Tanner H. Compton on Dec. 15, 1950, three days before the U.S. Army deployed him to Korea. In 1960, Marge retired and they moved to Overland Park, Kan., where Tanner opened a branch office for his company.

She was involved with the Lyric Opera auxiliary and volunteered at Trinity Lutheran Hospital where she helped with baby pictures. She also worked with Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts, the PTA and several parent auxiliary groups including band, flag teams, fraternity and many others.
Marge enjoyed traveling with Tanner to numerous conventions and business meetings. After purchasing a home at the Lake of the Ozarks in 1969, Marge spent many memorable vacations there with her family and friends.
Marge was also well known for her hospitality and wonderful cooking, monthly card clubs, craft clubs and progressive dinners. Marge loved her family and will be remembered most for her personable, proud and generous nature, and her constant good mood and sense of humor.
Most recently, Marge loved spending time with her five grandchildren, watching them grow and enjoying their many activities.
