Gertrude A. Gilliam, 95, of Glen Carbon, Ill., died at 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at the Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, Ill. She was born on July 3, 1916, in Benton, Ill., the daughter of the late Bruno A. and Gertrude M. (Fadley) Schettler.
Gertrude married Colonel William M. Gilliam on Sept. 21, 1942, at Fort Sill, Okla. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1982. She is survived by one son, Jim Gilliam and wife Kim of Fairfax, Va.; two daughters, Mary Gilliam of Albuquerque, N.M. and Janie Hyten and husband Kenneth of Glen Carbon; five grandchildren, Jeff Hyten and wife Holly, David Hyten and wife Julie, Steven Hyten and wife Kristi, Jesse Gilliam, and Drew Gilliam and wife Jennifer.
She was preceded in death by six brothers; an infant sister; and an infant great-granddaughter.
Gertrude was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Glen Carbon.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb.15 at St. James Lutheran Church in Glen Carbon, Ill. Funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Bob Weise officiating. Interment will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. James Lutheran Church.
