Ruby Nelson
Ruby Ellen Nelson, age 90, of Edwardsville, Illinois died at 3:33 a.m. Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville.
Ruby was a graduate of Sanford Brown in 1941. She worked as a legal secretary in Alton, the Illinois State School for the deaf in Jacksonville, the Children & Family Services in Jacksonville, and helped run various family businesses. She was involved in duplicate bridge in Jacksonville and formed the Edwardsville duplicate bridge club in 1997. She achieved Gold Life Master on October 25, 2008.
Ruby was born February 1, 1922 in her family home in Winfield, Missouri, the daughter of the late Andrew & Bessie (Irvin) Cannon. She married Cecil Carver and Walter Nelson, and they both preceded her in death.
Ruby is survived by 1 son, Vernon Carver of Edwardsville and 1 daughter, Sherry Elder & husband Pete of Clarkesville, Georgia; 2 grandsons, John McConnell & wife Natasha of Cumming,
Georgia and Andrew Carver & wife Amy of Edwardsville; 4 granddaughters, Ellen Graham & husband Fred of Clarkesville, Emma Peterson of Chicago, Alma Carver of Boston, Massachusetts, and Molly Carver of Edwardsville; 4 great grandchildren, Liam & Corinne McConnell and Will & Cannon Graham. She is also survived by several nieces & nephews.
Ruby was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, John, Walter & Jess Cannon and 1 sister, Vivian Darter.
Ruby was a member of the Winfield Baptist Church. As a youth she was in the Choir and ran the Youth Group. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
There is no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home with Rev. Jackie Havis-Shear officiating. According to her wishes she was cremated.
Family requests memorials to the Metro East Humane Society or a charity of the donor's choice. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.
