Joan M. Marchetti, 57, of the Fox Hill section of Plains Township, passed away Saturday, May 4, with her daughter by her side at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She courageously battled illness over the last three years but decided she needed to join her husband, Dave, who passed away May 2, 2013, and was laid to rest earlier that day.
She was born Nov. 2, 1955, the daughter of Charlotte Urban Walkowiak and the late Joseph Walkowiak.
Joanie was a 1973 graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, the first graduating class after the merger of Plains Memorial High School. She worked at Pomeroy's Department Store before her marriage. Joanie married the love of her life, Dave, on October 19, 1973. She was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.
A wonderful woman who took the most pride in being called a wife and mother, the best mother a child could have or ask for, no one ever saw Joanie without her daughter, Michelle, true "Best Friends" who have a bond that will continue long after her parting. Always offering a kind word to everyone around her, she enjoyed life and the people she met along the way. Joanie loved her weekly trips to St. Nick's Tuesday Bingo Night as well as "sneaking off" to Mohegan Sun with her daughter. Her infectious smile and feisty personality will be remembered by all who knew her. She will be sadly missed.
Joanie was preceded in death by her husband, David (May 2, 2013), with whom she shared 39 years of marriage; father, Joseph Walkowiak; uncles Frank Walkowiak, Henry Walkowiak; aunts, Mildred Forlenza and Clair Blandina; nephew Bruce Marchetti; father-in-law Gino Marchetti and mother-in-law Leonora DeBarry Marchetti.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle, Plains Township; mother, Charlotte Walkowiak, Plains; uncle Charles Walkowiak, Plains; brother-in-law, Gino Marchetti, and his wife, Joan, and niece, Nancy Marchetti Rock of Plains.
A special thanks to Dr. James Tricarico for your patience and caring of Joan throughout her illness. To Dr. Mark Schiowitz, thank you for your knowledge, skill and caring hands. You allowed us to have Joan with us for more time than we ever expected. We are forever grateful to you and you will always hold a special place in our hearts. And finally to the staff of Timber Ridge Health Care Center, thank you "Pine Hall" and everyone for the kindness and compassion you gave to Joanie and her family. You are a credit to your profession and will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Michael J. Mikelski Funeral Home, 293 S. River St., Plains. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plains. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Plains. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
