MIDLAND Fred Poe joined his God and his Savior in Heaven on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. Fred, the oldest of three boys, was born on Sept. 14, 1927, to Fred C. Poe and Rebecca Sprinkle Poe. He attended public school in Winters, Texas, and then went to Texas A&M. He married Truma Lee Smith in 1946. He left A&M to serve in the military during the last part of World War II. He was discharged and returned to A&M to complete his degree. Fred then taught school for two years prior to being recalled through the reserves to serve in Korea. After being discharged as an officer, he and Truma moved back to Winters, where they tried their hands at farming. Fred began working for the City of Winters, moving to Midland in August 1960, to work for the City of Midland Water Department. After four years he was promoted to assistant city manager, eventually becoming city manager. He served as city manager until his retirement in 1993. Fred is survived by his wife of 66 years, Truma Poe; one son, Keith W. Poe and wife Juli; and two daughters, Paula Poe LaGrone and husband Wayne and Sherry Poe Pack. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jake and wife Rebecca, Briana, Savanna and husband Michael, Kelsie and husband Noah, Fred, Abigail, Gavin, and Zane, all of Midland, Texas, Katheryn and husband Ben, Jordan and wife Darah, Lacey and husband Gus, Rachyl and fiancee Kerry, all of Colorado; and six great-grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Jefferson Cline Poe; his two brothers, Clifton and Butch; and his son-in-law, David Pack. Service will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Midland, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arise and Build Fund of First Baptist Church; or the Salvation Army of Midland, Texas. Online condolences may be shared at ellisfunerals.com.
