ROBERT LEE Robert "Bob" J. Large Sr.was born Nov. 25, 1922, and died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 62 years and four months, Nancy "Polly" Large; and their four children, Harold Wayne Large and spouse Cindy of Orange, Texas, Luther Large and spouse Carolyn of San Angelo, Rebecca "Becky" Large of San Angelo and Robert J. Large Jr. "Bobby" of Mertzon, Texas. Bob is also survived by three granddaughters, Vanessa Shannon and spouse Eddie Shannon, Gennie Large and spouse Terry Block and Pam Constance; one grandson, Luke Robert Large; one great- granddaughter Tyler Block; and two great-grandsons, Garrett Shannon and Cole Constance. Bob also is survived by his cousins, Dan Calfee, June Harry and Pat Klinkerman. Bob's family included special friendships with Craig and Kathy Michael of Copper Center, Alaska, Jim and Allie Jo Horn of Carlsbad, Texas, and Bill Campbell of Grape Creek, Texas. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Rossie Large; and his brother, Raymond. Bob was passionate about his love of his country, his family and friends, the brotherhood he experienced with his Masonic brothers and fellow sailors. Bob was an avid sportsman, fisherman, hunter and champion of Texas baseball and football teams. Bob served his country proudly for 21 years in the U.S. Navy. He was a decorated seaman who was a Pearl Harbor survivor, served on both the Pacific and European fronts and was assigned to the USS New Orleans Cruiser which received 17 battle stars placing her among the top four highest decorated ships of World War II. Bob continued to express great love and dedication for his country throughout his life and fiercely advocated for our military forces and their families. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, in Robert Lee Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Danny White. Pallbearers will be Mike Bagwell, Dan Calfee, Bill Campbell, Jim Horn, Craig Michael and Luke Large. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. The family would like to thank Shannon Medical Center and Robert Lee Care Center for care provided to him. The children would like to recognize the extraordinary care Polly provided to her husband, Bob, through his illness, as well as constant support and love from Craig and Kathy Michael, beloved friends.
