Max Hulse Obituary

SAN ANGELO Max Hulse, confident that God causes all things for His ultimate glory, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 20, 2011. Max was a devoted husband, beloved daddy, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a faithful friend. Max was born in Hollis, Okla. on Aug. 24, 1931. He grew up in Littlefield, Texas, and graduated from the University of North Texas. Max had a successful fifty-year career in the brokerage business, most of which was spent with Principal/EGT. As West Texas Regional Manager, he opened offices for the firm in Odessa, Midland, Abilene and Lubbock. Max was then promoted to Assistant General Sales Manager of Principal/EGT and transferred to Dallas. His desire to return to West Texas prompted a move to San Angelo, where he opened and staffed the San Angelo office of EGT in 1974. He subsequently was elected Senior Vice President and appointed to the Board of Directors. Max also had a second career in the art business. In the mid-60's, he began collecting art for its aesthetic as well as investment value. From there, he opened the Texas Art Gallery in Dallas. Through the influence of his wife, Sandra, who is an accomplished artist, he then began painting. He was motivated by creating something beautiful and sharing that enjoyment with others. Max opened Concho Art Gallery in the Cactus Hotel, where he sold his original paintings. He has won various awards and accolades for his work. Max participated actively in many civic, church and professional activities. Organizations include Boys Club, YMCA, Fort Concho Foundation, United Way, San Angelo Fine Arts Museum, Goals for San Angelo, The Heart Fund, Samaritan Counseling Center, San Angelo Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He also became involved with The Communities Foundation of Texas and served on the Advisory Board. He was instrumental in establishing the San Angelo Area Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas and served as chairman of the Advisory Council. He has served as a board member of the Texas Council on Economic Education and was on the Advisory Board of Howard College Foundation. Max has served as president of the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council. He also served as chairman of the San Angelo Arts Council. Max was active in Bill Glass Prison Ministries. He organized and was president of the steering committee for the National Prayer Breakfast of San Angelo. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Lorene and Dewey Hulse; and son-in-law Dan Novak. Max is survived by his wife, Sandra Freeze Hulse; his three daughters, Cheryl and Ron Murff, Kim and Kirk Davis and Kristi Novak; eight grandchildren, Amy Murff Perry, Aaron Murff, Chase, Caroline and Blake Davis, Casey, Courtney and Cody Novak; and three great-granddaughters, all of Dallas; two sisters, Glenda Pope of Lubbock and Karlyn Fedora of College Station and their families. Others survivors include three stepchildren, Barton Gunter of Dallas, Elizabeth Gunter Steving and Sloan Gunter of Fredricksburg and their families. Max had a tremendous zest for life. His enthusiasm was contagious, as evidenced by the numerous friendships he cultivated over his lifetime. He was an accomplished musician, artist, golfer and pilot. Max truly lived life to the fullest. He was a man of deep faith and integrity. Max had no fear in death because of the unshakeable confidence he had in his Lord. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, at Glen Meadows Baptist Church, 6002 Knickerbocker Road, San Angelo, TX 76904. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Max Hulse Family Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas, 5500 Caruth Haven Lane, Dallas, TX 75225. Bill Glass Prison Ministry, PO Box 761101, Dallas, TX 75376 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55:8-9.

Dear Sandra,
Please know as you walk these hard days ahead you will often be in my prayers. Though it has been many years since you and Max graced my life those experiences were formative for me in so many ways. I can still see Max holding Tucker as an infant.. that kind of gracious kindness creates an everlasting legacy and reminder of God's presence.

Sandra, Sloan and Liz,
I want to you to know that I have had you all in my prayers this week. I, as everyone was shocked at the event that took this man that so many loved and respected. I got to talk with Max last year and he was so kind. He talked of his family and let me know where everyone was living. He was so proud of all of you and I could see him smiling through the phone.

To the Hulse Family - I only got to be with Max a few times but I know how much he meant to my mother (Cammie) and to my uncle Monte. I'm grateful to have such a great heritage from the Hulse family. I remember my own Grandparents (Ray & Lucille) all the time and I tell stories to my kids about Dewey and Ray that were told to me as a kid. Max certainly has a testimony of a life well lived. The Welch's from KS have you in our thoughts and prayers.

To Cheryl, Kim and Kristi. Looks like we have had a tough spring. Your dad was great to help my dad mourn the loss of my mother and then when the Judge died, he of course was the first person over to comfort our family just 10 days ago. Please forgive me for not coming to the service- these days have been burdened. I guess the old, but fun Odessa folks are having a reunion. Max was a fine man and always a good friend.

Max was a very special Christian man. San Angelo will miss him. We will miss his smile and his telling us jokes when he came into our place of business. God be with you all.

I recently learned from my mom that Max would have jam sessions with my dad (David Lindemann) at his home weekly and how great of a man he really was. I only knew him a short while and the last time I spoke to him was a week ago about scheduling for him and my dad to reunite. I was going to do graphic work for him in exchange for harmonicas......Max, I hope you are painting the heavens and playing the harp with your beautiful gift...wow! What a life you lived!

Max was a great guy, a fine Christian man, and an asset to his community. What a great example of a life well lived. Max told me once that one of his favorite gospel tunes was "I Bowed on My Knees and Cried Holy." I'm sure Max has already told Timothy, "I want to see Jesus cause he's the one who died for me."

Max had such a wonderful personality, was such a thoughtful and gracious person and brightened up a room with his mere presence. We will happily remember him and will talk about him often.

Bill and I are praying for God to give grace, mercy, and peace to the family. Max was such a wonderful man. My parents, Jim and DIxie Wimpee, who are both with the Lord now, so loved and enjoyed their friendship with both Max and Sandra. Many good memories from the early days of starting Southland Baptist Church with the help of Max and Sandra. He will truly be missed.

Well, Max, we WILL see you again at HOME! We shall never, ever forget your joy and zest for life and your accompanying the band playing at Si Como No in Costa Rica. Most of all, we are grateful for your faith and for your integrity which shine as examples for us all. GOD BLESS, Dear, dear Friend. Sandra, how our hearts ache for you! It will be good to be HOME at last. Know we love you dearly and are carrying you in our hearts and prayers. Carolyn and Ed Underwood

Kristi, Kim and Cheryl...I'm so sorry to hear of your sweet daddy's passing. I never met him but Kristi always spoke of him with a smile on her face. That speaks volumes. Please know that you are all in my prayers during these hard days. Love,
