SONORA Donald A. Grider was born in Lockwood, Mo., on Sept. 17, 1932, and died in San Angelo, Texas, on Friday, April 19, 2013. Don graduated from Odessa High School in 1950. After graduation he went to work for Ab-Tex Drilling for a short time and then joined WES-TEX Drilling Company as a tool pusher at age 21. He continued with WES-TEX until he formed Grider Trucking Company in 1973. Don formed his business with modest means, determination and hard work and was proud of his business, his employees and the company he built. Don could be a demanding boss, but never asked more of his employees than he was willing to give himself. He not only loved the oilfield, he thrived on it. Don did not believe in taking "days off" and his motto was simple, "never put off 'til the next second what you can do right this second." He was preceded in death by his parents, R.C. and Blanche Grider; sister Billie Kramer; daughter Nancy Grider Tovar; and wife Jan Grider. He survived by his wife, Earlene Grider; daughters Karen Duke and Donald of Longview and Janice Caruthers and Doug Skolaut of Sonora; son Kerry Grider and Cheryl of Red Oak; daughter Paulette Grider of Abilene; and brother Dale Grider of Longview. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at The First Baptist Church of Sonora with the Revs. T. Wayne Price and Matt Killough presiding. Pallbearers will be Billy Martin, Tom Lock, Joe Fincher, Rusty Garner, Ben Pool, Tony Renfro and Bob Caruthers.
