SONORA Charles Mitchell Howard Jr. of Sonora, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at the age of 85. He was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Gainesville, Texas, to the late Charlie and Grace Howard. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Beverly; daughter Debbie Hard and husband Robert of Sonora; son Curtis Howard of Palm Springs, Calif.; granddaughters Stephanie Hard of McAllen, Kara Blair and husband Cody of Sonora; brother Dale Howard and wife Cindy of San Antonio; and nephews Cory Howard of San Antonio, Chad Howard and wife Michelle of Duncanville. Charles served in the U.S. Navy and while on furlough met his wife to be. Charles and Beverly Smith were married Aug. 18, 1950, in Sonora. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he continued his education at Gainesville Junior College and graduated from North Texas University in Denton receiving a degree in elementary education business administration. Upon graduation, Charles and Beverly moved to Sonora where he was employed by Carl J. Cahill for 20 years. In 1971, Charles formed his own business, Charles Howard Construction, where he worked until he retired in 1995. Charles was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He loved doing good for others. He loved his place at Rough Canyon in Del Rio and loved to fish. He enjoyed RVing to many states. A special thanks to Keith Butler for his help and support. Thank you to Dr. Chang, Veronica, Laura, Amber, Christie and Rose Marie from Hospice for their love and care they provided. Also thank you to Dr. Pajestka and the wonderful staff at Hudspeth Memorial Hospital. A special thank you to all our wonderful friends and brothers and sisters in Christ who gave us support through this trying time. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing." 2 Timothy 4:7 and 8 Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Sonora Church of Christ. Pallbearers will be Jerry Kemp, Terry Schenkel, Eddie Smith, James Benson, Freddie Benson and James Blackman.
