Curtis Scott Syler

ATHENS Memorial service for Curtis "Scott" Syler, 79, of Athens, in scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Louie Adams officiating. Mr. Syler died Thursday, July 28, 2012, in Athens. He was born in Blanco, Oct. 23, 1932, to the late Hubert Mathew and Monnie Lou Glimp Syler. He married Martha Cameren Nov. 19, 1966. Scott was a resident of Athens since 1963, formerly of San Angelo. He was a lifelong Baptist and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Blackjack. He was a horse and cattle rancher. In his later years Scott was a sculpturist in western art. Scott had been a calf roper from his teens competing in high school to his mid 30's with Professional Rodeo Cowboys Associations. He was a gold card holder. Scott was preceded in death by his parents; sister Margaret Ann (Peggy) Rowlan; brother Dr. Jim Syler; and nephew Lee Bentley Syler. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Martha Syler, Athens; brother Matt Syler, Burton; nephews Jeb Stuart Syler, Hendersonville, Tenn., Mark Syler, Kansas; nieces Melanie Ann Willis, Plano, Darla Ann Pagan, Richmond, Dr. Suellen van der Colff, Athens, Summer Ann Lawrence, Athens; and cousins Tom Glimp, Austin and Leta Mae Ebeling, Burnet. Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Brown, Gene Brown, Warren Garrett, Charles McCleary, Bobby Perry, Dr. Joe Prud' homme, Bobby Joe Riggs, Bill Riggs, Herbert Riley, Dr. F.M. "Monty" Rouquette and Robert Scott Speer. Additional honorary pallbearer that were special to Scott are Jason Adams, Cody McCleary, Kyle Riley, Byron Rehkop, Clint Speer, Jay Williams and Dusty Windham.
