BALLINGER Marilyn Sommer, 83, of Ballinger, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. She was born Dec. 29, 1930, to E.A. and Leda (Cervenka) Sommer in Ballinger, Texas. After graduating from Ballinger High School, she attended the University of Texas in Austin. Marilyn was the first woman to earn a science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Texas. Shortly after her graduation in 1952, she moved to the Houston/La Porte area to work for Shell Oil. She retired from Shell in 1985 after 33 years of service. Marilyn loved her Astros and Longhorns but her true passion was fishing. She moved back to Ballinger in 2009. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by numerous first and second cousins. Visitation for family and friends is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger. Graveside service is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Ballinger with David Dunn officiating. Arrangements are with Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger.
