SAN ANGELO After a life of service, Patrick "Pat" "Rege" Lowery passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Born on Feb. 23, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Michael and Catherine Lowery, he joined the Benedictine Order at St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana at the age of 17. He took his final profession on March 21, 1958, and served the Lord as a Benedictine monk for 23 years until he left the monastery to care for his ailing parents. He worked in the hotel and hospitality business following the death of his parents and moved to San Angelo, Texas, in the early 1980's. Following his retirement, Pat, or Rege as his family called him, continued a life of service. He served his faith community at Sacred Heart Cathedral as the sacristan for many years. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, becoming a 4th Degree, serving as Grand Knight as well as contributing many volunteer hours. He also volunteered at Meals For The Elderly visiting with those who were housebound. After retiring, Pat (Rege) also worked as a school crossing guard, no matter what the weather was, he was there each morning and afternoon, taking great care to make sure the students he watched over were able to cross safely each day. His dedication to his students was often recognized by thank you notes from their parents. He was a quiet man who loved his family and friends, was proud to be Irish and served his Lord not only as a monk, but each day in his care and service to those around him. He took great interest in genealogy and spent many years collecting information as the family historian. His love for his family was expressed with a deep love and loyalty - he was happiest in the presence of those he loved. Pat (Rege) was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Joe Lowery, Martin Lowery and Jack Lowery. He is survived by one brother and two sisters, Brother Mark Lowery, F.S.C. of Pittsburgh, Sister Mary Mark Lowery, I.H.M. of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Peggy Sullivan and her husband Joe of Pittsburgh; as well as two sisters-in-law, Joanne (Joe) Lowery of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Tillie (Jack) Lowery of San Angelo, Texas. He is also survived by his large extended family of many nieces and nephews who loved their sweet "Uncle Rege." The family would like to express a very special thank you for the loving care given to Pat (Rege) by the Jack Lowery family, especially Tillie Lowery, his sister-in-law, and nieces Mary Duryea and Teresa Goode. As his health begin to fail their compassion, care and companionship demonstrated the true meaning of love and family. Additionally, the family would like to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Ty Hughston, Pat's (Rege's) doctor for many years and the staff of 5 South at Shannon Hospital for their care and compassion. There will be a rosary and visitation at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral service, under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2014, with resurrection Mass at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart with burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Carrying Uncle Rege to his final resting place will be his nephew, Jack Lowery; and great-nephews Taylor Duryea, Jason Hardy, Johnny Lowery, Michael Lowery and Jordan Fowler. Honorary pallbearers are the Knights of Columbus. Memorial donations may be made to Meals For The Elderly; Sacred Heart Cathedral; or the Knights of Columbus.
