SAN ANGELO Robert Edward Porter, 79, of San Angelo, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, June 23, 2014. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Southgate Church of Christ in San Angelo, Texas. Robert was born on June 8, 1935, in Harlingen, Texas, to Harry Brown and Eva Grace (Ewing) Porter. He graduated from Barnhart High School in 1954. He attended San Angelo College, making many friends and being actively involved with the football team as their manager and was affectionately known as "The Possum." Robert worked several jobs throughout his career including the Texas Highway Department, M.L. Leddy's, Pool Company, Morrow Resources, Aermotor Windmill Co. and retired after working at Western Towers. Robert deeply loved his family and is survived by his wife, Lillian (Strickland) Porter; son Robert Cody Porter of Carlsbad; and daughter Kristi Porter of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by two brothers, Lewis Porter of San Angelo and David Porter and wife Dena of Ozona; a sister, Marcella Porter of Irving; and a brother-in-law, Chester Lynd of Abilene; as well as five nieces and four nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Brown and Eva Grace Porter; brother Harry Brown Porter Jr.; sister Harriet Jane (Porter) Stevens; brother-in-law Bill F. Stevens; and a sister, Linda Jean (Porter) Lynd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., of Nashville, Tennessee; or a memorial of your choice.
