SAN ANGELO Alf Ardie Harmon, born Feb. 14, 1920, in Coke County, Texas, to Thomas R. and Amanda Sparks Harmon, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Family members were by his side. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, officiated by the Rev. Charles Beal in the funeral home chapel. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way. Alf married the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Hejl, on Aug. 30, 1946. They were married 66 years. They lived in Midland, Robert Lee and San Angelo. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church for 57 years and served as usher until his health no longer permitted. He was a veteran of World Wae II, inducted on May 22, 1944, having served in France and Germany. He was headed to Japan for a beach-head landing, while on the way they heard the news that they dropped the first atomic bomb and 17 days later the war ended. They re-routed him to Manila, Philippines. He was honorably discharged on May 10, 1946. Upon returning home, he married Dorothy and moved to Midland and worked at Midland Iron Works. He then bought a Caterpillar and a blacksmith shop and went into business with his brother, J.D. Harmon, in Robert Lee. He later moved to San Angelo and went to work for Wendland Mfg. Co. and retired after 28 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and they took many trips together. It was important to him to spend special events, such as holidays and birthdays together. He was always ready, willing and able to help them in anythin they needed. He was a loving, caring father and will be missed so very much. Alf is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son Ardie Harmon and wife Linda; daughter Darlene Harmon Boyd and husband Jackie; grandchildren Kristi Harmon Briley and husband Tom of San Angelo, Kirk Harmon and wife Andrea of Fort Wayne, Ind., Joey Boyd and wife Carrie of Fort Worth, Tanner Boyd of San Angelo, Roger Hendrix and wife Tammy of Milwaukie, Ore.; great-grandchildren Brittany Briley of San Angelo, Taylor, Riley, Sydney Harmon of Fort Wayne, Ind., Cambrie Boyd of Fort Worth, Ian and Taylor Hendrix of Milwaukie, Ore.; sister Inez Harmon Harper and husband Kenneth of Robert Lee; brothers Milton (Bill) Harmon of Robert Lee, Randle Harmon and wife Mary Ann of San Angelo; and sister-in-law Olean Stricklan of Robert Lee.
