Ruth Rucker Odor Saxon, 97, of Tavares, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at her home. She was born on Feb. 28, 1916 and was the daughter of Rodger and Verdellia Rucker of Lexington.
She lost her father in the influenza epidemic of 1918. Her mother, a school teacher
returned to her home of Williamstown Kentucky and raised Ruth and her brother, Rodger Jr. as a single parent. Rodger Jr. died several years ago.
She met her husband, Hubert in Williamstown and they were married on August 21, 1934. She was a homemaker on a dairy farm in the Mt. Pleasant community near Williamstown. They lost their first child at birth and their last child at three days of age and raised four children. Hubert retired from the USDA Soil Conservation Service.
He and Ruth retired and moved from Kentucky to Eustis, Fla. in 1975. They were active in their church and loved square dancing. Friends used to kid them saying that they danced eight nights a week. During retirement they traveled all over the United States utilizing a pop-up camper trailer pulled by a Volkswagen Beetle and later by a Volkswagen Van Camper. They also traveled the world, visiting many parts of Europe, Mexico, South America, Norway and Sweden. They were married 56 years and Hubert died on May 11, 1990 approaching his 80th birthday in August.
Ruth remarried on May 15, 1991 to Carl Saxon of Eustis. He was a widower and lived three doors down the street from her in Eustis. They moved to Baytree Golf Community in Tavares. Their union was an enriching experience for both of them. He was an avid golfer and a musician, having played in the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He was of Italian heritage and they traveled to Europe, Spain, Egypt, Norway and South America. On one trip they visited Carl's relatives in Sicily. He died in 2002 at the age of 88. Ruth continued to live in her home in Baytree until her death.
Ruth and Hubert are survived by four children, David Odor of Danville, Edwin (Dora) Odor of Tavares Fla., Howard (Brenda) Odor of Leesburg Fla. and Lois (Ed) Odor Combs of Altamont Springs, Fla. She is survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and various other nephews, nieces and cousins.
She is also predeceased by two grandchildren, Vicky and Scott Odor, children of Howard and Brenda Odor.
Burial will be at Williamstown Kentucky Cemetery with Elliston and Stanley Funeral Directors officiating. At her request, there will be no service at Tavares or at Williamstown.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends and relatives make a donation to their favorite charity in her honor.
