Billy Ray Loomis, 70, of Martinsville, died 3:48 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis after a sudden and recent illness.
He was born on Friday, Nov. 8, 1946 in Sherman, to the late Evaline (Gordon) Loomis Sydnor.
He and his only sibling, Pete, were born and raised in Grant County by their mother and grandparents, Urie and Dial Gordon.
He graduated from Grant County High School with the class of 1964, alongside his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Sharon Kay (Arnold) Loomis. The two met at the age of 12 and were married on Dec. 15, 1964. They moved to Indiana in 1968, eventually making Martinsville their home.
He worked well into his late 60s at AT&T, retiring after 48 plus years of dedicated service. He was instrumental in countless advancements in technology and service throughout his employment and was a member of the Communications Workers of American Union.
He was a member of the Sherman Baptist Church and boasted about his attendance as a young boy, never having missed a Sunday in over 10 years.
He had a genuine love for children. He spent many years coaching girls' softball, volunteering at his daughter's classroom promoting education to her students and anonymously making financial gifts to assist with children's needs. He also had a love for the outdoors, animals, technology and his community. His greatest love was undeniably his family.
He will be deeply missed by his many friends and loving family, including his wife of 53 years, Sharon Loomis of Martinsville; a daughter, Stephanie (husband, Jim) Wesseler of Martinsville; a brother, Pete (wife, Judy) Loomis of Crittenden and three beloved grandchildren, Mason Ray, Riley Kay and Max Landon Littell.
He was sadly preceded in death by his mother; grandparents and a daughter, Laura Lee Loomis in Oct. 1976.
Funeral services were held Aug. 15 at the Neal and Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville.
There will be a graveside service with burial at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 in Williamstown Cemetery.
The family has requested no flowers, rather memorial contributions be made to either the Merry Mac Players or the Morgan County Humane Society in Billy's memory.
