In 1972, she took a job with the original Columbus Hospital, working as a nurses' aide and later as ward secretary. Carla also later worked in medical records as a coder. She retired from the hospital in 2005, but continued to work part time for Benefis at home until 2011.

She loved her home and many gardens and had a vast knowledge of flowers. She liked the outdoors and the changing seasons. She was especially close to her "very special cousin" Denise Gray, and remained in touch with her childhood friends, Trina Foos, Marilyn Malchow, Janet Anderson and Dorothy Johnson.

Carla was a member of the B.P.O. Does at the Elks Club since 1987, serving as president twice and state president in 2006. Her devotion to the Does was immeasurable, volunteering up until a few weeks before her death.

Carla was always concerned more about others than herself and was known for serving others, dropping everything to help someone in need. She volunteered for Toys for Tots.
