Great Falls —James Thomas Brown (Jim) died late Saturday night March 22, 2014 at Peace Hospice, from natural causes. The entire family was able to rally around him in his last days. His granddaughter Erin was holding his hand the moment he passed.
The whole family had just celebrated his birthday with him slightly before the April 9 date he was born in 1928. His biggest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene; children James Walter Brown (Teresa), Allison Brown Florance (Mike), and Edith Helen Nielsen Ellsworth. Grandchildren, Jon Nielsen (Drew), Erin Nielsen, Robert Florance, Kathryn Florance, Mackenzie Brown, JD Brown, Greatgrandson Louis Neilsen and former son-in-law Eric Nielsen. First Lieutenant Jim Brown served in Korea and Japan during the Korean conflict
and was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base at the end of his service. He then served on the Military Affairs Committee of the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce. Additional community activities include: Great Falls Symphony Board, Founding Member of Community Beautification Association, Junior Chamber of Commerce, lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church and past President of the Great Falls Lions Club. Jim grew up on the family ranches in North-Central Montana and graduated from Chester High School in 1946. From an early age he was in partnership with his brother Allen in the farm and ranch business finally retiring in 1999. He also began selling hail insurance in the mid 1950's to ranchers and farmers forming his own agency, Jim Brown Insurance, which served the state of Montana for many decades. He achieved the status of CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor) in 1981 and was named boss of the year in 1977 by the Professional Insurance Agents of Montana. In 1950 he graduated cum laud from MSC (Montana State College) in Bozeman majoring in accounting. Jim was a Life Loyal Sig in the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was very proud of his Scots heritage and although he didn't play the bagpipes, he participated in it traditions. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Allen Brown and Margaret Alice Kinread Brown, aunt Helen Jeanette Brown, brother Allen David Brown, and sister Alice Edith Tourigney. Our gratitude and thanks to Peace Hospice and Benefis Doctors, Nurses and caretakers. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Lawn Mausoleum. A Celebration of Life will take place Friday 11:00 AM at the Meadowlark Country Club.
